Swimming strokes
There are many different swimming strokes, each working different muscles and requiring different levels of fitness. Butterfly, for example, requires strong shoulder and arm strength, while breaststroke is a less explosive technique. Swimming lessons can teach you any of the following main strokes:
- Breaststroke – using your legs in a frog-like motion and your arms as scoops in front of you.
- Backstroke – lying on your back, your arms are used in a windmill style to propel you through the water, while your legs kick.
- Front crawl and freestyle – a powerful form of swimming, front drawl drives you through the water with kicking and scooping motions.
- Butterfly – possibly the toughest stroke, butterfly involves both arms coming forward simultaneously, propelling your body forward and out of the water.
Swimming lessons for rehabilitation
As well as being a great sport in its own right, swimming is one of the best ways to improve your overall fitness. Swimming puts little stress on your joints, ligaments and muscles – supporting much of your weight in the water. This makes swimming lessons ideal for people recovering from injuries.
Swimming training – the right diet
As with all sports and fitness, eating the right diet is important. Healthy eating doesn’t have to mean following the latest celebrity fad diet or cutting back on delicious foods. Eating right means getting a balance of all the key food groups and reducing your intake of harmful sugars and fats. Our healthy eating guide can help you start on the path to healthy living. As well as minding your diet, you should try not to eat a large meal at least an hour before swimming.
