Fast paced, high-impact and totally exciting, rugby is one of the most demanding and adrenaline-soaked sports around. While you don’t have to be huge to enjoy rugby, it is a very physical game involving hard tackles, scrums and bursts of sprinting.
Rugby is one of the UK’s favourite sports. Both amateur and professional rugby teams meet every week across the country, with rugby training sessions usually available no matter where you live.

Rugby training and rugby types
Rugby is believed to date back to 1823 when a young man picked up the ball during a football match at Rugby school. Since then, rugby has spread across the globe, with particular success in Australia and New Zealand. Rugby has also split into three main types – rugby league, rugby union and rugby sevens:
- Rugby Union – rugby union is the original form of rugby training. Teams have 15 players and play doesn’t stop when a player is tackled. Instead, both teams can contest the ball. The scrum is more important in rugby union than the other forms of rugby. Rugby union also has the lineout when the ball goes out of play.
- Rugby League – rugby league broke away from rugby union in the late 1800s. The main differences are that there are 13 players on each side and each team gets six tackles before the play switches. After each tackle the tackled player is allowed to get to his feet and roll the ball back to his teammates.
- Rugby Sevens – though using many of the same rules as rugby union, rugby sevens is a faster game involving only seven players per team. Rugby sevens games usually only last around fifteen minute, so that entire rugby sevens tournaments can be fitted into a day or weekend.
Rugby training and rugby teams
Rugby is played at all levels and in all forms across most of the country. Though rugby league tends to be more popular in the north, you can usually find rugby clubs and rugby training for each type throughout the UK.
