Netball is one of the most popular team sports in the UK, particularly for women. Netball training is also a fantastic way to keep fit, working most of your major muscle groups and your cardiovascular system.
Netball is usually played on a hard court – either indoors or outdoors. A netball hoop at each end stands at the top of a 3.05m high pole, but unlike basketball there is no backboard behind the ring. Seven players on each team compete to get a light, white ball into the hoop as many times as possible, without breaking netball rules.

Two simple netball training exercises
There are dozens of netball training drills and exercises that could help your netball skills improve. A netball trainer can help you develop all the core skills you need. Why not try these simple netball passing and fitness exercises:
- Triangle passing/defence – passing and interception are crucial to netball success. This drill requires 4 players, 3 of which stand in a triangle 3 metres apart from each other. The fourth stands in the middle. The other three then pass a ball between them, while the fourth tries to block the pass.
- Netball zigzag – several players line up at the bottom corner of the court. One person starts running, then the rest follow on 1-2 metres behind. The person at the front jogs along the baseline, then sprints diagonally to the opposite line. The player in front can then vary the running speed and the direction.
Netball training – the right diet
To get the most from your netball training and to improve your overall health you should eat a balanced diet. You won’t have to cut out all your favourite treats or follow a complicated fad slim plan – you just have to try and eat fruit, vegetables, oily fish and lean meats as much as possible while cutting back on harmful sugars and fats. Our healthy eating guide can help you start on the path to healthy living.
