Superfoods are types of food that are thought to be crammed with nutrients, offering extra health benefits and boosting the immune system. Many superfoods are full of antioxidants which are believed to help protect against free radicals – molecules which can attack cells and lead to premature aging.
While not every superfood is as “super” as the next, most offer real health benefits and a good dose of vitamins and minerals. Many dieticians recommend trying to include several superfoods in your diet each week – the more superfoods the better!
Some specialists even claim that superfoods have real disease-busting qualities – helping prevent against such conditions as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and other ailments.
Which foods are superfoods?
There’s a lot of debate over what constitutes a “superfood”. The European Union has even recently passed a law demanding that all products claiming to be superfoods must back up that claim or remove the “superfoods” label by the next two years.
However, there are many foods commonly regarded as superfoods – either for their disease-busting qualities or for their high proportion of vitamins and minerals:
- Blueberries
- Wheatgrass
- Acai Berries
- Goji Berries
- Pomegranate
- Lemongrass
- Ginger root
- Parsley
- Soy
- Oats
- Beans
- Spinach
- Wlanuts
- Spirlina
- Green tea and White tea
- Alfafa
- Broccoli
- Kale
- Beetroot
- Salmon
Superfoods for life, superfoods for vitality…
Don’t be misled into thinking that eating a few mouthfuls of superfood berries every week means that you can keep eating pizza and burgers! Superfoods should make up part of a balanced, healthy diet. You can read more about good nutrition here.
Hint: try not to overcook any of your superfoods. Boiling or overcooking can leach superfoods (and any vegetables) of their vitamins and minerals. Try shallow frying, steaming, grilling – or simply eating your superfoods raw!
