A double chin can be one of the most stubborn areas to shift. That extra fat and wobbly flap of skin beneath your chin just doesn’t look good in photographs! However, there are ways to get rid of your double chin, particularly as part of an overall fitness programme.
Excess fat can be a sign of poor fitness and body condition. This can lead to health problems – from heart disease to high blood pressure. It can also leave you feeling listless, tired and lacking in confidence.
There are no quick fix pills to totally get rid of your double chin. The best way to combat a persistent double chin and any body fat is a good exercise programme and a healthy, balanced diet.
If you would like help, motivation and expert guidance on how to lose your double chin, Health Fitness Doctor can help you find a personal trainer in your area, or even online.
Getting rid of your double chin – where to start?
Facing a new exercise programme or a new diet plan can be daunting. Even once you have started, sticking to a routine and keeping motivated is difficult – and many people quit after a few weeks (and their double chin remains!).
The first step is to set realistic fitness goals and a diet plan that doesn’t put you under too much pressure.
- Draw up an achievable routine and stick to it. Don’t get too ambitious or you may feel disheartened if you don’t get rid of your double chin quickly.
- Try and cut our excess fats, sugars and unrefined carbohydrates from your diet. Look at our nutrition pages for more information.
- Stay focused and motivated by making your programme fun! Vary your double chin exercises and look up some great recipes for healthy cuisine.
- Chew carrots, celery or sugar free gum to get your jaw working – this can help tighten you muscles under your chin and make your double chin disappear
Get rid of your double chin – a few quick exercises
Here are some good exercises to get you started on losing that double chin. With these, you can do them at the office, waiting in a queue, while watching television – any time you like!
- Put your hand on the back of your head. Gently push forwards while tilting your head to the right. Try and get your head back into normal position – without putting too much strain on the neck. Now, try the same motion but tilting your head to the left.
- Try massaging your neck with two fingers of each hand starting at the ears and working your way towards the centre of the chin. Then, lift your chin up and smooth your hand along the neck several times.
- Open your mouth wide and pull your bottom lip over your bottom teeth. Then move your jaw up and down. This exercises the platysma – a muscle responsible for pulling down the corners of the mouth.
